Hi,

I have a 2005 Yamaha Grizzly 660.I noticed it used about 1/4 quart of oil the last time I checked.
It has about 35 hours on the last oil change.I just wanted to know if this is normal oil consumption.

Thanks

No, you need to do a compression test or a leak down test to see where you stand.

35 hours is a long time before oil changes, even on lo-po 4 strokes. I would say that is normal considering your over due for an oil change.

I was told by my yamaha dealer that 50 hours is the interval for oil changes.
How many hours do you think I should go.

Thanks

If he does heavy mudding, plays in the water a lot, or rides in extremely dusty areas, then I would agree with you Jon, but I go at least 50 hours between changes, and the oil still looks good when I change it out. If he just does normal trail riding, I don't think 35 hours is out of line at all.

As for the initial post, no....you shouldn't be using oil like that. How many miles are on the Grizzly?

I retract my previous statement as CC and GreyGrizz are probably the most knowledgable Ute riders on this site. I am just paronoid about my oil changes and probably change my oils far more than I sometimes need to. Yes, do a leak down test that will tell you the most about what or where the wear is occuring. With a simple too you can do this yourself.

If you didn't know here is a nice diagram about what we are talking about

toyxcab,
I have a 2005 Grizzly 660 and I change the oil every 40 hours. I also notice that after that time period the level is down about 1/4 of a quart. It uses that amount of oil if I ride long distances at a high throttle rate. If I am just cruising more slowly while I am looking for promising prospecting areas, it uses no oil at all. I have 4,000 miles on the machine (I use Yamaha 10/30 oil).

Toyxcab,

If this is what you are experiencing, I would just ride and enjoy.

I change the oil in my 05 660 Grizzly once a year. Not sure how many hours that is but the most it has ever been down is about a quarter of a quart. I would assume that what you are experiencing is normal.

First I want to say that I am real thankful for all the good advice.
I am a real new member to this group, and didn't know what to except...........You guys rock.

I use the quad almost every weekend, and sometimes twice a week.We do patrols in Lake Arrowhead for the forest dept.On a normal ride we will ride between 25-60 miles. Most of this is in 2wd and some 4wd.We only need the 4wd lock on the hardest Black Diamond Trails.I have 189 hours and 1,838 miles.I bought it used in Jan 09 with 144 hours. The grizzly averages between 15-22 mpg.I just love this quad and am really glad I bought it.

Thanks Again for all your helpful information.
