I am looking at buying a flat screen t.v. Probably 48 - 52 inch. I don't know much about all the new features. I am seeking any input on what to look for and what to stay away from. What is your thoughts, opinions, or advise on this subject?

I have a 42 inch VISIO LCD. I have had it over a year. I have been very pleased with it. When I was shopping for them the features I was looking for was: LCD, (plasmas don't do well at high altitude, so I read and was told) 2 HDMI inputs, Cat5 input, (mine came with every other type of analog input as well) QUAM tuner, and firmware updates (like new drivers for your TV that help with functionality) IMO I think just about any TV on the market is going to perform well unless your really really picky or a movie buff. I am not real picky on how deep the colors get ect... although is is apparent that the blacks are a little blacker on Plasmas than LCDs but unless they are side by side OUTSIDE of a store. Really it will come down to how many and what kind of inputs you will need and how many.

If you're looking for HD , get a true hd (1080p)-you'll appreciate it a lot more.
Everything else is basically personal prefference.
you might be a redneck if you say "Gun show was full today, ammo going out the door. Bought 900 rnds of 223 lake city brass, for 450.00.. "

This is true, especially if you pan on going with a Blue Ray player, which renders true 1080p.
I have a 55 inch Sony SXRD LCD Projection TV, and I can't say enough about it. Dunno if you plan on hanging the TV on the wall though, in which case you will need a regular LCD panel. I highly recommend Sony, and believe it or not, Samsung is making some incredible sets with amazing contrast ratios. Their blacks are REALLY black. Good luck with your search.

Yes I forgot get something 1080P like the others said. You will never be able to watch sports in SD again.

In that size 1080p is meaningless. If you ar sitting 7' or closer then..maybe..you'll be able to tell a difference with the 52".
What's your price point? If you can spend a few grand..up to $5k, then get the Pioneer Kuro plasma. By far the best display that has ever been on the market. It is the holy grail..for now.
Right now LCD is the worst technology. No offense to LCD owner's. Just speaking facts. I know there are some decent looking LCDs out there, just speaking from a comparison point of view. I would stick with plasma for now. LCD is making some great improvements now, though. In a year or so they will be great contenders.
The Vizio plasma along with Panasonic and Samsung should be high on your list. For price the Vizios are hard to beat.
Let me know your price and I'll try to narrow it down more for you.
How far will you be sitting?
How lit is the room? Sunlight?
What angle will you be viewing the set from?
What type of media will you be watching mostly? TV, movies, video games, sports, ect.
Will you be implementing this into an HT set up or simply using the TV alone? This makes a difference if you need built in speakers in the TV.
What will the source be? Will the set be a monitor only? Cable, satellite, OTA, ect? The makes a difference if you need a tuner in the set. If we can get rid of the speakers and tuner, we may be able to get a little more performance for the dollar.

LCD is not the worst tecnology. They are pushing plasmas out of the market. Last friday they had a samsung plasma for $900 that my friend bought last christmas for 1700. Next year they probably wont be available.
black friday had some really, really nice deals on TVs.
1080p is nice for bluray but thats about it. HDTV is still broadcast in 1080i or 720p. And unless you're a video engineer you probably won't be able to tell the difference.
like ccharos, i got the sony sxrd but the 50" and i also love it. But I'm not sure if they're still making them, flat panel LCDs have took over. Sony and Samsung are at the top of the market when it comes to TVs.
The future tecnology is OLED. They have a million to one contrast ratios and are thinner then LCD. Really expensive right now and the only consumer model is like 10". This will drive down the prices of LCDs in the future.
TVs have a lot to do with personal preference. look at your wallet, then look at the screen, then look at your wallet and look at another screen, and so on....

Now here is a thread that has some good "real world" advise. I applaud THEMAN and ROBROB25 for their input.

Thank you, Rob. I need to clarify, for performance LCD is the worst technology. Motion blur, inaccurate color, poor black levels and shadow detail, along with artifacts in the screen are what holds LCD back. They are just recently getting better, though. Read any review in any Sound and Vision or Home Theater mag. These mags are easy to find and pick up to start learning.
The only reason it's "taking over" is because it's flat and cheaper to make than plasma, not because of performance. It all boils down to what you want to do with the set. If you're serious about video, LCD is not the way to go. Sorry LCD guys, just the plain hard facts. Doesn't make LCD crap, just means there is better for not much more money, if any.
Pioneer Kuro is at that top for performance. This has been proven in every review performened. Panasonic is not far behind.
