Hey guys ( and girls) I just got a new welder a few weeks ago. Okay well new to me. On my wife's side her grandma bought this welder for my wife's grandpa about 25 years ago and he never used it. Seriously I don't even think it has been plugged in. It been in her garage for all this time and My wife's grandpa pasted away a few years ago. Sooooooooo she gave it to me. It's a Craftsman 230/180 volt AC/DC stick welder.
It works sooooooooo much better than my fairly new welder I got about 4years ago, but then again the newer one was a small 100 volt stick welder.
My question is when should I use the AC and when should I use the DC?
Ac goes to 230 volt and DC goes to 180 volt.
Thanks in advance

I normally run DC myself , but if you're welding thin metal , you might want to try the AC side of things. Just a heads up.

BBQ,have you ever welded SS with a stick welder? I have welded with gas on an old C J 2 that I rebuilt frame off resto,it looked like Frankenstien, but it held up very well.Heli-Arc is fairly easy. And the new wire welders are a snap.A.C. is a lot harder than D C in my opinion. The first welder I ever used belonged to my brother, and he made it from an old battery charger by reversing the fields he said.

never welded stainless but as far as normal steel and a stick weld yea thats what i learned with i used a wire feed one time they work so nice and easy. never used a gas welder. i can make a solid weld but i still need alot more practice in getting that nice bead pattern on my welds but i dont get to practice unless i break something.
welder out of a battery charger--thats intresting--how did that work out??
seems like a pretty ingenious idea

The fumes welding SS with a stick welder can be very detrimental to you're health and mental condition, that could be a clue. I've got an old 350 amp AC Hobart, I use it for hardsurfacing only. If you can PM Coolmudrunner from this site, you would find a wealth of knowledge. He's the premiere welder on this site. Just look at his truck.

Grizz, I grew up with a welding lead in my hand, I worked for my brother after school. A friend of his helped him convert the charger, the guy could build anything. I once saw him drill a water well with a 1951 chevy convertable! He also built a CB radio out of a 50's model car radio. He built a neon plant, and bent glass for neon signs.I learned to weld pipe(steel)and was learning to weld monel with a smithy torch, then I was called to the service.I still have a shop and tools that I use now and then.I love motorcycles, and have had many Brit bikes.I sold a good used Kubota tractor with a fronend, and all the equip. just a few minutes for 9800.00....now lets see what I can put that money too!
