Here's a technical question--can anyone explain the difference between air-cooled, air/oil-cooled and liquid-cooled? How important is it in a working ATV (as opposed to a sport/trail riding, high speed type?)
I'm still researching utility ATVs...leaning toward Yamaha +/or Polaris for my needs...torque not speed.
Thanks all!

My BMW was air/oil cooled,I would think a liquid cooled would last longer, just ask any Harley owner...

oh god , he has a BMW , lol ....
air cooled means it is cooled only by a fan , oil cooled means it has an oil cooler line that allows the oil to cool off , liquid cooled is an engine that has a radiator and coolant/antifreeze to keep the engine at a normal working temp.
From past experience , I would recommend a liquid cooled atv , for anything other than racing.

liquids are good for racing too, a bit heavier, but still good.
most utes nowadasys are liquids anyway
KTM 450XC-Ohlins triple rates w/piggie, ohlins damper, hipers, some billet stuff, hindle exhaust, durablue spacers on the front, FLEXX bars, Walsh stem, Maier hood

Typically a liquid cooled engine is going to have a longer life span. The reason for this is that a liquid cooled engine remains at a more constant temperature so the temp of engine parts is not constantly changing. With an oil cooled or air cooled engine they will have a more variable temps. This will cause more engine wear do to the different types of metals involve shrinking and contracting at different levels.

My BMW is an oil/air cooled bike.BMW makes liquid cooled also.
