I forgot to explain heat cycles but I asume you know that. Biggest thing is to check your head bolts for propper torque and do a valve adjustment/check after you are done with the break in proceedure.

Hell yeah, I break mine in on an MX track

Dude, no joke. My brother got his bike back Thursday and there was a race Sunday. So, some of Saturday practice and then Sunday race on an engine that's never been started.

Be sure to change oil more frequent the first while that your out on it. I'd say every 2 rides or so until you feel it's broke in good.

My regular intervals of oil changes in my 4 strokes and 2stroke trannies ARE every 2 rides or after a race.

I'll do every three practices or after a race weekend. Oil and the Oil Filter.

RTY,
Great link. I've never see that much detail on break-in. The additional supportive data is certainly worth the reading. I wonder how this all plays out since the advent of new anodized cylinder liners and Teflon coatings used on some of the other internal engine components?
Thanks,
Sid

I found it over on the totallyamaha forums when I was rebuilding my sled. I guess it all makes sense to me the way he explains it, and he has years' worth of success to back it up. I was looking at some of his other articles after I posted this, if you sign up you can see them all. Another very interesting read are his sections about the misconceptions of port size and velocity porting.

Good link RTY! I always like differing points of view and supportive data to back it up! We need more of these types of responses on this forum.

That is a very interesting article, today I was cleaning the garage and why I was doing that I started the raptor and let it run for ten minutes and shut it down to cool down. Then repeated that two more times. Cause I read that article in ATVSPORT about how to break in a 4 stroke motor. Now saturday I'm going to take it out and I was going to break it in the rest of the way, the way the ATVSPORT arctile said to do it. run it for ten minutes at 50% the way I normaly ride, then let it cool for 30 minutes and then repeat this step going up 10% everytime until I reached 100% of how I ride. Now I think I'm going to run it at 100% right away for 20 minutes and then change the oil and go for it again! I hope my rings didn't seat all the way for running it on the stand Like I did today. If what this guys says is true, I hope I didn't do the start of a bad break in. I want to make sure I get everything from my motor for a long time. Crap! I hope I wasn't in idiot for doing it wrong before. This is somewhat confusing now!
