I sold my Rincon for all the above reasons.......Suzki and Yamaha ,only way to go...Honda is yesterdays newspaper....The Big (ugly) Red is a prime example. Engine and transmission oil or all in one....poor design.:S
jhess, you just didn't have the riding skills to ride your Rincon properly, and you probably used the wrong oil in your machine which gave you your supposed transmission problem, which were no problems at all. I see the cvt belt driven auto systems as being closer to being a poor design, or there would not be so many aftermarket companies offering fixes. Lord help that the belts don't get wet.

I had the exact opposite reaction. I use to own a rubicon and it was pretty good,but I wanted more,so I rode a friends rincon 650 and then rode another friends grizz 660.I came away more impressed with the grizz and went and bought an 05 grizz660.We all have different riding styles and different atv preferences,thats what makes the world fun. And the honda has only 2wd or 4wd, what do you mean by "normal 4 wheel drive"?The rincon and the grizz both have 2 or 4 wheel drive selectors, but they are actually only 3 wheel drive.The front wheels are not both working at the same time.Thats when you need the diff-lock and the grizz has a diff lock.But like I said the rincon is very nice and if they had a diff lock and more ground clearence I would take a closer look at buying one.
I do not own a Rincon 650, I own a fuel injected 680. It manhandles the griz 660 on the trails. You are under a false illusion on how the non-lockered 4 wheel drive systems of the Honda and Yamaha operate. Just by your statement "The front wheels are not both working at the same time" is not a true representation of the true workings of the front differentials on both the Rincon and Grizzly. I can do a jack rabbit start on a dirt trail and leave 4 wheels of spinout marks. Both wheels in the front do work at the same time in 4x4 mode. There are certain cases that may not be the case, but in every case of being stuck in deep mud all four wheels were turning vociferously. The reason I was stuck was because of being High-Centered, a problem even the Grizzly has in the deep mud. Of course riding skills can be used to get either out of being stuck with out using a locker.

My brother has had the older Grizzly 660, and now the 700 griz and just bought the 550 griz, and I have to say the Rincon in normal 4 wheel drive is much easier to ride than either of his three grizzlys. He has said himself that he does not like riding his 700 in 4x4 mode. On the Rincon, you can hardly tell the difference between in and out of 4 wheel drive. I have never ridden a Brute Force 750, but I like the concept of its locker. That would be the locker setup I would like to see on the Rincon. My recent trip to Chadwich OHV in Missouri was a testament to the climbing ability of the Rincon. Most all the trails were rated hard to real hard, and took alot of skill to navigate. Rode all of them in 4x4 mode, and can truthfully say that the Rincon was easy to handle throughout that ride. Not to say that after four days of trail riding on that trip our arms were not sore. The Rincon has a one inch lower clearance than the Grizzly at 10", but that one inch makes a huge difference in handling between the two. There is no power steering or locker on the Rincon, but it definitely has a more fun factor than the griz.

I see no one noticed that sheep do not "herd" because they are too busy being in a "flock". I have travelled in Canada multiple times on way to Alaska, who by the way has the largest surplus every year and pays it out to the residents in form of "dividends", and from east to west one can see the effects of socialism. The only authorized public broadcasting is the BBC, and it only puts out the government line. I have alot of admiration for western Canadians, especially in British Columbia, because they are the most friendly, and are the most like their southern neighbors. Their health care system is where Canadians have lost most of their freedoms and liberties. Three doctors once had an entrepenurial idea to buy three MRI machines on their own dimes in one of the BC cities, and was shut down by the Feds before could open their business. These men were going to perform MRIs at a low price that most in Canada could afford, and it was going to be unconnected to the state run money stream. Cash and Go if you will. The Gov not only threatened severe legal action, but also wanted to confiscate the MRI machines from the doctors who paid for them. This would have been a Godsend to Canadians, but the gov didn't want to make these kind of private enterprise concessions. This was a big story when I lived in Washington State. Sure you supposedly have free health care in Canada, but the saying in "Economics" is that there is no such thing as a free meal. The health care issue in the US is not really about "Health Care", but about the Federal government gaining more control over the population, and usurping more of out individual liberties and freedoms. The "Sheep" of America are waking up in large numbers now because they respond well to the Heritage of what makes us who we are, liberty of the individual. Obama has really been clear on what his governmental goals are, and that is to create change in our fundamentals of government, "For the people, by the people, of the people". Buyers remorse is the effect of Obama's steadily dwindling approval numbers. We have reached a tipping point on our tolerance of this current Congress, and I believe it is almost a done deal on the soon ouster of the Liberal members.

RE: Big gun vs hmf full exhaust for 2004 400ex

I will be going with the HMF Sport pipe for my 07 400EX because it can be color coded to your atv color. Plus I can get a jet package to compliment the pipe, and get the Honda shop to install and test it. Plus the HMF and HLS suspension companies are linked and will be getting a pair of Rezzie shocks up front and revalved on the sent in rear shock.

What new feature would you like to see developed on Utes?

With all the new developments on ATVs, what are some things that would be a great new feature you would like to see the manufacturers add to Utes?
Here are a few that I have given thought to...
1. With the advent of PS on utilities to ease the arm fatigue, why not develop a digital throttle for FI machines such as those on boats. The resistance it takes to hold the throttle open is adjustable and can be lessened as the throttle thumb is fatigued.
2. An onboard compressor system like the one on my Goldwing for the air suspension. Air suspension that can be increased when carrying extra weight on the racks. And it can be tied into tire inflation such as on the H1 Hummers. When needing extra traction in mud lower the pressure, or for more resistance in preventing rim dings when rock climbing, raise the pressure .
3. A communication module that has a whip antenna on the back rack, that operates on bluetooth signal to the helmets, and can transmit to other atvs with the same system.
I know these can be developed to work on atvs reliably because they already do so in military applications. What are some of your ideas?

I have and like the 400EX that I purchased a year ago, which was a left over (07) in 08. I bought it for $4188.00 out the door at one of those Mass Volume Dealers in Tennessee. I came across this place from cruising the internet. There are more of these kind of dealerships across the US if you research. There were no setup or delivery fees that dealerships charge, and since it was out of state no sales tax. I could have ordered a TRX 450 ER with the HRC kit added for $5600 out the door from the same place, but wanted reverse so the 400EX. Just an idea for you to look into.

I don't think the atvs being built now are as sturdy and tough as the ones made in the '80s and '90s..I put the Old Honda Foreman at the top of the chain,with the Suzuki KQ 300 next(ground clearance) in line.Tough tough machines,even when used in a commercial situation,which we used them in. I would put the 05 Foreman 500 that I have as one of the toughest I've experienced, so I do not think I have to go back 19 to 29 years to find a tough/sturdy atv.

Plumb: I had a Rincon just like yours,except my tranny was the problem and why I sold it. I am by no means a proponent of belt drive(I had a BMW R1200C),but for what ever reason,mine didn't want to move very well in cold weather. Dealer said I wasn't waiting long enough for the oil to heat up.I did not like the fact that the engine oil also was the tranny oil. So it really wasn't a faulty transmission at all, but you being perhap ignorant on how to get it to operate best for whatever the conditions. This has been discussed before while you were under a different moniker. The Rincon has a torque converter transmission which works on the same principle as a high performance tranny on a Camaro or Mustang. I think it has the sportiest feel of any utility calling itself a sport utility. This transmission gives the Rincon the highest fun factor of its type. Whether to operate in auto, or to use the electric shift method gives it far more versatility that the CVT trannies used on all other big bore utes. And mine has now given me three plus years of faultless service and is definitely earning a reputation of reliability. I would like to the Rincon modified by Honda to be more like the Renegade, with a juiced up engine and the same transmission but with 4 speeds and a seriously upgraded suspension.

This is absolutely the best thread on this site right now, because it is real and is something that resonates with us all. This was certainly a traumatic experience for you, and our love for our children is the truest of loves, and we feel their pain as acutely when they are hurt as your son was. I am sure you would gladly have traded places with him if you could have taken on his pain. I am relieved to read that he seems to be making a complete recovery, as I know you are. God bless you, your son and family as you all have gone through this.

RE: Renegade 800 vs Sportsman 850 XP

I can see the appeal of the XP850 as a utility quad because of its robustness and power, but I don't see a comparison between it and the Renegade. I would use the XP850 to tow an atv trailer on a campout in the woods and many other chore type uses, or for an all day trail ride in challenging terrain. I would think to use the Renegade in a different manner, with sport riding in mind. Apples and oranges. For comparison to the Renegade, there are no other like it, and the closest I would come is the TRX700XX.

It is evident that all atv's today can do well over its first two to three years, as in the case of automobiles. I am not a Dodge/Chrysler fan because of quality concerns, but they seem to do well until the 3 years are up, and than they start having problems. ATV's are abused moreso than cars, so the life expectancy is even shorter, and will show issues sooner. Most of us do not have the discretionary income to buy an atv and trade it in after two years; we tend to keep it for awhile. We like to have the expectation that if we go out to an atv destination of a lifetime, that our machine will perform well and have no problems. After three years of ownership the odds of it letting us down gets greater, and can possible spoil a trip by breaking down on a weekend or far from home. You stay at the camp while everyone else rides. This is when reliability is most important. Here is where I think certain brands have done well in building a reputation. In todays market, reliability is as important as the features a machine may offer, and that likesorangebikes is why people will buy a Honda with fewer features because of their quality and reliability reputation. I have now owned my Rincon and Foreman for over three years and still have complete confidence in their working well on my atv trips. When we are talking about five or more years of ownership of atv's, maintenance is so importance in keeping our machines running. It will than be a reflection of our stewardship of the machine to keep it in top shape. Someday we may want to sell it, and its condition will determine the resail value. Again, certain brands will wear better than others over time, and certain ones quickly come to mind.

I have to ask the question on this shootout, how large is this market segment anyway. Is there a way the magazine can tabulate from empirical data the number of two-up units sold in a year's time and than ratio that with the overall atv sales numbers? What are the safety factors encountered with 2-up handling as compared to single person atvs. Can you raise and answer the reason why we should buy a 2-up machine in your article.

RE: Best ATV Trails In The US

I have travelled to ride at many parts of the US, and enjoyed them all. I rank the Buffalo Mt. trail at Hatfield/McCoy as one of the best. Chadwick OHV in Missouri was outstanding and very challenging with steep climbs and rock crawling. Lake City Colo, and the high elevation trails in its vicinity were very memorable and picturesque. The myriad trails at Ocalla National Forest in Florida were worth those trips as well. I lived in Washington state for seventeen years before moving to the Southeast, and there were spectacular riding areas around the Bremerton area. On the Olympic Penensula there were miles of national forest forestry roads for OHV. My hope is that more and more states will follow the Hatfield/McCoy example, and the Florada example and use these national forest for OHV tourism. Maybe the best yet trails are still to be discovered.

Hey, how many of you have kept hold of your aging machines a little longer, especially in the current economy, and have put off trading into a newer model? As we have just added another year to our machines, and with 09 looking worse than 08 for economy, have you been experiencing problems with the longevity of your ride? As far as brands go, I wonder how the different makes are comparing to each other in repair cost? I know I have heard some on this forum say that all the makes are about as reliable as the Honda's, has recent history proven that out? How much has brpbear had to spend on repairs so far on his 06 OUTY? Maybe there is still something to be said for buying for reliability.

these type things happen in business all the time where the manu of the class leading item is sued, and the competitors take advantage of the situ to gain market share. Think about it, which SxS brand would buyers mos likely purchase if other than unavailable Rhino? I would go with the Prowler (950cc), followed by the big red, followed by the Teryx.

Hey woodsrunner, I've read alot of your post on other forums, and think you get it. But after taking many multiple day atv trips, toward the third and fourth days of straight riding PS is a great convenience. I would also like an alternate throttle system by that time as well.
